Google Brings AI Traffic Pilot to Vancouver

Vancouver is adding Google’s artificial intelligence to a traffic network containing 966 signal records, but the city is not handing its intersections to Alphabet. The pilot uses Google Maps driving trends to recommend signal-timing changes, while municipal engineers retain authority over whether anything is implemented.

The pilot began July 17 and is scheduled to continue through the end of 2027 at no cost to the city, according to Daily Hive. The recommendations will remain advisory, leaving Vancouver responsible for evaluating potential effects on vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and transit users.

Google says Green Light reconstructs existing signal plans using aggregated driving patterns from Google Maps. Its models estimate cycle lengths, transition times, green-time allocation, coordination between adjacent intersections, and how those settings change throughout the day.

What’s the latest?

  • Mining: Critical One Energy is investing $9 million to expand its Ontario antimony project as it seeks U.S. funding and a role in the North American defence supply chain. The project contains a historical resource of ~48 million pounds of antimony, with recent drill results as high as 70.2% antimony over 4.0 m, while the U.S. continues funding domestic antimony projects amid efforts to reduce reliance on China. North American processing capacity is expected to take 5–10+ years to rebuild.

  • Crypto: A flaw in Coinkite's Coldcard hardware wallets allowed hackers to steal more than US$100 million (C$140 million) in Bitcoin, affecting over 7,300 wallet addresses. The vulnerability traced back to a firmware update released in 2021, and Coinkite has apologized, halted shipments, destroyed affected inventory, and released a software fix.

  • Markets: The S&P 500 (+1.8%), Dow (+907 points, +1.7%), and Nasdaq (+2.6%) all closed at record highs, driven by strong corporate earnings and a 5.3% drop in Brent crude to US$79.36/bbl. AI leaders including Palantir (+29.5%), Nvidia, Broadcom, and Micron rallied, while the 10-year Treasury yield fell to 4.62%, easing inflation concerns.

  • Politics: The federal government is moving to designate a proposed Alberta-to-B.C. oil pipeline as a "national interest" project, a step that would fast-track approvals under the Building Canada Act. The 1,250-km pipeline would transport over 1 million barrels of oil per day to the West Coast, while environmental groups and the NDP oppose the plan, arguing it weakens oversight and conflicts with Canada's climate goals.

  • Real Estate: Calgary home sales fell 9.2% YoY to 1,904 in July, while the benchmark home price declined 2.0% to $569,200, driven largely by an oversupply of condominiums. Condo prices dropped 8.4% to $297,600, row homes fell 6.1%, detached homes 1.9%, and semi-detached homes 0.3%. New listings declined 15% YoY to 3,323, with inventory down 4.2% to 6,626 homes.
