Liberals Push Youth Vote at 16

Reports have surfaced that Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith’s new e-petition (E-6629) urges Ottawa to extend the federal franchise to 16- and 17-year-olds, arguing that teenagers already shoulder real responsibilities and deserve an equal voice at the ballot box.
“Extending the voting age to 16 would empower a new generation to participate in democracy while still in school, where habits of civic engagement are more easily built,” Erskine-Smith says, repeating language he used when he backed an identical private bill in 2022.

Enbridge: Enbridge will invest US$900 million in a 600-megawatt solar project in Texas to power Meta’s data centers. Construction is underway, with operations set to begin in summer 2027. Meta has signed a long-term deal to buy 100% of the renewable energy output. The project reflects rising demand for clean power from major tech firms.
Stellantis: Stellantis reported a US$3.7B loss in H1 2025, with Trump’s auto tariffs alone costing the company $480M. The Brampton plant’s retooling remains paused, leaving 3,000 workers in limbo likely until 2026 or later. Stellantis warns full-year tariff losses could hit $2.4B, possibly leading to higher vehicle prices. Ongoing uncertainty over U.S. policy is delaying decisions about the plant's future.
AutoCanada: AutoCanada is exiting the U.S. market, selling 17 American dealerships for $82.7M amid Trump's auto tariffs. The Alberta-based company plans to refocus on its 64 Canadian dealerships and pay down debt. AutoCanada reported a Q1 loss of $3.2M from continuing operations and $12.9M from discontinued U.S. operations. The company entered the U.S. in 2018 but struggled to scale due to infrastructure and market challenges.
GM: General Motors took a US$1.1B hit from tariffs in Q2 but still beat expectations with $2.53 adjusted EPS, above the $2.44 forecast. Revenue dropped 2% to $47B, and adjusted EBIT fell 32% to $3B. GM maintained its annual profit outlook of $10B–$12.5B despite tariff headwinds estimated at $4B–$5B. U.S. sales rose 7%, while GM returned to profit in China and plans $4B in U.S. investments to support combustion engine production amid slowing EV demand.
Coca-Cola: Coca-Cola beat earnings expectations with Q2 EPS of $0.87 vs. $0.83 estimate, driven by a 6% price hike despite a 1% drop in volume. Revenue rose 2.5% to $12.62B, exceeding the $12.54B forecast. U.S. and Mexico volumes fell amid consumer boycotts, but Coca-Cola Zero Sugar volumes surged 14%. The company plans to launch a cane sugar Coke in the U.S., which may increase costs due to supply chain changes.
