Trans Mountain Questions: A group of oil shippers is urging the Canada Energy Regulator to compel Trans Mountain Corp. to provide a detailed breakdown of the escalating construction costs for the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project. They argue that the costs have ballooned from $7.4 billion in 2017 to over $30 billion, and are seeking clarity on why the project's expenses continue to rise. While Trans Mountain asserts that 70% of the overruns will be absorbed by the company, the remaining third will lead to increased tolls for the shippers.
McDonalds Outage: McDonald’s experienced a system failure on Friday, causing disruptions in some parts of the world that prevented customers from placing food orders. The company confirmed the outage but assured that it was not related to a cybersecurity incident. McDonald’s Australia reported the issue first and stated that most restaurants had reopened by early morning.
Major Projects: The Saskatchewan government is embarking on a $1.15-billion project to expand irrigation, focusing on the Lake Diefenbaker expansion. This initiative aims to make more water available for farming, potentially irrigating an additional 364 square kilometers. Costs will be shared between the province and participating producers, with Premier Moe expressing hope for federal funding. Despite concerns raised by Indigenous groups and environmentalists, Moe sees the project as vital for water and food security in the face of climate change.
Nissan-Honda: Nissan Motor and Honda Motor are considering a strategic partnership to collaborate on producing key components for electric vehicles and artificial intelligence in automotive software platforms. The potential partnership aims to help the two companies develop economies of scale in producing EVs amid heavy competition. The companies have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to explore areas of collaboration, including cost-cutting measures and potentially a capital tie-up in the future.
Gaza Aid: The Gaza Strip received its first food aid shipment via sea as the Open Arms vessel arrived, aiming to alleviate the hunger crisis affecting the territory with over 200 tonnes of food. However, hopes for a ceasefire were dashed after Israel rejected Hamas' latest counter-proposal, which included the release of Israeli hostages and discussions for ending the conflict.
