Trump’s Mail Voting Contradiction

The White House is arguing that President Donald Trump’s use of a mail ballot is consistent with his campaign to restrict mail voting, even as his administration asks the Supreme Court to revive federal rules that would give the government a larger role in determining which voters can receive ballots through the Postal Service.
The distinction offered centers on exceptions contained in legislation Trump wants Congress to enact, rather than the Florida rules under which Trump actually voted.
Reuters reported that White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales defended Trump after Politico reported Monday, citing local voting records, that the president had voted by mail in Florida’s August 18 Republican primary.

What’s the latest?
Politics: Trump said the U.S. is no longer in talks with Iran, despite previously claiming negotiations were underway, while insisting the Strait of Hormuz is open and cleared of mines. In reality, shipping remains near a standstill, with just three vessels crossing Sunday, and a cargo ship was struck Tuesday. Meanwhile, two Iranian ballistic missiles were detected heading toward the UAE, underscoring the escalating regional tensions.
Trade War: Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney are holding last-minute talks just hours before the U.S. is set to impose 50% tariffs on roughly US$20 billion of Canadian imports, including hockey sticks and wine. The tariffs could severely hurt Canadian exporters and small businesses, while the U.S. Chamber of Commerce warns they could raise costs, disrupt supply chains and put 13 million U.S. jobs tied to USMCA trade at risk.
Energy Pact: Happy Valley-Goose Bay, a Labrador town of about 8,000 people, says it needs new infrastructure and funding before supporting the proposed Newfoundland and Labrador–Quebec energy deal, which could bring hundreds of workers and increased traffic. The town is seeking commitments for a municipal depot, firehall, ambulance facilities, housing and social services. Two Quebec Innu nations also say they were not consulted and insist on participation and consent before any agreement proceeds.
Markets: Canada’s S&P/TSX fell 304.92 points to 36,363.00, pressured by losses in base metals, technology and financials. U.S. markets also declined, with the Nasdaq down 340.47 points to 26,304.44 and the S&P 500 down 49.70 points to 7,695.36. Oil rose US$0.45 to US$84.19/barrel, while gold fell US$50.90 to US$4,422.80/oz.
Real Estate: Canada’s annualized housing-start pace fell 5% month-over-month in July to 229,074 units, from 240,773 in June. Actual starts in centres with 10,000+ people fell 19% year-over-year to 18,834 units, while the six-month average declined 0.5% to 247,377. Completions rose 8.1% to 19,773, while approved but not yet started units increased 3% to 141,480.
